The Wedding Suit Guide
How to Choose the Perfect Suit for Your Wedding Day
Your wedding day is the one occasion in your life when every detail of your appearance will be photographed, remembered, and cherished for decades. The suit you choose is not simply an outfit — it is a portrait of who you are at one of the most significant moments of your life. This guide will walk you through every decision: style, colour, fabric, and whether to go bespoke.
01 | Why Your Wedding Suit Is the Most Important Suit You Will Ever Wear
Most suits are worn and forgotten. A wedding suit is worn once and remembered forever. It will appear in every photograph, every video, every memory your family carries forward. This is not the occasion for compromise — it is the occasion for intention.
The right wedding suit does three things simultaneously: it honours the formality of the occasion, it reflects your personal identity, and it complements your partner. Getting all three right requires thought, time, and the right guidance.
02 | Choosing Your Wedding Suit Style
The Two-Piece Suit
The most versatile option. A well-cut two-piece in ivory, champagne, or light grey is appropriate for almost any wedding. It is modern, clean, and allows your accessories to do the storytelling.
The Three-Piece Suit
The addition of a waistcoat transforms a suit into a statement. Highly recommended for church ceremonies, ballroom receptions, and any venue with architectural grandeur.
The Morning Suit
The pinnacle of daytime wedding formality. The traditional choice for formal church weddings and country estate ceremonies.
The Tuxedo
Reserved for evening weddings and black-tie receptions. If your reception begins after 6pm in a formal venue, the tuxedo is not just appropriate — it is expected.
| Style | Formality | Best Venue | Time of Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-Piece | ★★★☆☆ | Garden, boutique hotel | Day or evening |
| Three-Piece | ★★★★☆ | Church, ballroom, estate | Day or evening |
| Morning Suit | ★★★★★ | Grand church, country estate | Daytime only |
| Tuxedo | ★★★★★ | Ballroom, luxury hotel | Evening only |
03 | The Colour Guide for Grooms
Wedding suit colour is one of the most personal decisions a groom makes. The key is to choose a colour that photographs beautifully, complements your partner's attire, and feels authentically you.
Ivory and Off-White
The most romantic choice. Ivory reads as warm and luminous in photographs. Pair with a champagne or blush tie and brown leather accessories.
Champagne and Warm Beige
Understated and deeply elegant. Photographs exceptionally well in golden hour light. Ideal for outdoor summer and autumn weddings.
Light Grey and Silver
The most versatile wedding colour. Works in virtually every setting and complements any bridal colour palette.
Midnight Navy
For the groom who wants depth and drama. Photographs with extraordinary richness and pairs beautifully with silver or burgundy accessories.
04 | The Fabric Guide
Pure Wool (Super 110s–130s)
The gold standard. Fine wool drapes with natural elegance, breathes throughout the day, and holds its shape. Super 120s is the sweet spot for wedding suiting.
Wool-Silk Blend
Silk adds a subtle luminosity that catches light beautifully in photographs. Ideal for grooms who want quiet, understated luxury.
Linen Blend
The fabric of summer weddings. Exceptionally breathable and naturally textured. Perfect for outdoor and destination ceremonies.
Velvet
For the groom who wants to make a statement. Dramatic and luxurious for evening winter weddings. Photographs with extraordinary depth.
Wool-Cashmere Blend
The ultimate winter wedding fabric. Extraordinary softness and warmth while maintaining structure.
| Fabric | Season | Character | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Wool S120s | Spring/Autumn | Elegant, structured | All wedding styles |
| Wool-Silk | Spring/Autumn | Luminous, photogenic | Formal ceremonies |
| Linen Blend | Summer | Relaxed, breathable | Outdoor, destination |
| Wool-Cashmere | Winter | Soft, luxurious | Winter ceremonies |
| Velvet | Winter | Dramatic, rich | Evening, black-tie |
05 | To Buy or Go Bespoke?
Ready-to-Wear with Alterations
A high-quality RTW suit, properly altered, can achieve an exceptional result. Never wear a wedding suit straight off the rack. Budget for sleeve length, trouser break, and chest suppression at minimum.
Made-to-Measure
The middle path. Cut to your measurements with fabric and detail choices that are yours alone. The ideal balance of personalisation and value. Allow 8–12 weeks.
Full Bespoke
Constructed from scratch around your body. Every seam, every canvas, every detail made for you alone. Allow 3–6 months.
"The difference between a suit that fits and a suit that was made for you is the difference between looking good and looking like yourself."
06 | Coordinating with Your Groomsmen
- Tone differentiation: Groom in ivory or champagne, groomsmen in light grey.
- Style differentiation: Groom in three-piece, groomsmen in two-piece of the same colour.
- Accessory differentiation: Same suit, different tie, pocket square, or boutonniere.
- Fabric differentiation: Groom in wool-silk blend, groomsmen in pure wool.
07 | The Wedding Suit Checklist
- Set your timeline. Bespoke: 3–6 months. MTM: 8–12 weeks. RTW with alterations: 4–6 weeks minimum.
- Confirm your venue and dress code. Let the formality guide your style choice.
- Choose your colour. Consider the season, venue lighting, and your partner's attire.
- Select your fabric. Match weight and character to the season and setting.
- Decide on two-piece or three-piece. When in doubt, the three-piece is almost always the right answer.
- Plan your accessories. Shirt, tie, pocket square, boutonniere, shoes, and watch as a complete look.
- Schedule a final fitting. No less than two weeks before the wedding.
- Steam, do not iron. On the morning of the wedding, steam to remove creases.
Your wedding suit is the one garment in your wardrobe that will outlast every trend, every season, and every occasion. Choose it with the same care and intention you bring to the day itself.
